Duel #4 - Scarlett Johansson vs Tom Waits
Tom Waits vs Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett is a good actress, but she looks pretty good as well. So there was much scepticism when she released here first album, a collection of covers from Tom Waits. mission accomplished here with the participation of David Bowie and producer Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio)

On the other side of the ring there should be no need to introduce one of the last giants of alcohoolic jazz, Mr Tom Waits. I just falled in Love with his first album some years ago and never grew tired of it.

Aswad
Aswad Live and Direct

Aswad is a group which shows two opposing sides of Reggae. In the sequins of success and on the tv screen, there is the Aswad who show the old UB40 demons which reside within....but in the darkness of the small concert halls, another face shines through....darker, yet more luminous...

Recorded in 1983 at the Nottinghill Carnival in London, this "Live & Direct" has a few guarantees. It has the best of Aswad, most notably on this "Rockers Medley", a pure "live" moment where the power of the rythm section is only equalled by the fire of the brass.

Bomb the Bass
Bomb The Bass - Clear

Bomb The Bass, the pseudonym of London producer, Tim Simeon, clearly marked the beginning of the 1980s with some wicked singles, such as "Beat Dis".

The first single from his 3rd album (and undoubedly the best), "Bug Powder Dust" is an electro hip-hop mix of the highest standard, with a hypnotic bass loop.  It was originally composed by the American Jazz bassist Alphonso Johnson (for those of you who like all the details!).

East and West
Talvin Singh - OK
Banghra reached its peak at the end of the 90s and this period was as interesting as it was brief. A few major albums surfaced during this time, such as the first Asian Dub Foundation, Nitin Sawhney's "Prophesy" and "OK" by Talvin Singh.

Unquestionably the closest to the traditional sound, Talvin was introduced to the tabla (popular Indian percussion instrument) by his grandmother in India. Living in London he was strongly inspired by the Drum and Base scene of the time.
Of this double culture, Singh kept the best parts, namely tolerance and open mindedness. Both these qualities are perfectly represented in his music, all the while traditional and futuristic, spicy and sweet, energetic and contemplative.
These contrasts being fairly representative of modern day India.

The Lodger

Question : what happens when you leave the flat you’ve been sharing with you best mate for a while, best mate who also happens to be the lead singer of your band that is having quite some success, Supergrass for instance ?

Right, of course you think to yourself: I guess we’re getting older then and, by the way, who is going to take the rubbish out now ? Oh well, never mind you’ll get hammered on your own then.

Except that when Danny Goffey (man behind Supergrass’s drums and yes indeed son of Top Gear Chris Goffey) left the London house he’d been sharing for quite a long time with his fellow Gaz Coombes to move in with his other half (Pearl Lowe who apparently had also been having some ‘fun’ with get-me-out-of-here-everyone-fancies-me Jude Law, are you still with me ?) things started to get cloudy in the London Britpop music industry.
Summer of 1998 was one big ‘Supergrass’s days are counted...give them 3 more months and they are over and done with’ gossip, and indeed, not only was Danny no longer in charge of taking Gaz’s empty bottles out before bedtime, but he had also recorded a brilliant LP with his gorgeous one.

A one-off with a hint of Supergrass’ tunes but having the lovely voice of Pearl on board brings some fairy-tale tones added to a piano that is both oldie-worldie and out of tune, a perfect lazy days blend to fill the last days of summer.

Bang on time, a brand new icecream café has just opened around the corner and it’s time for me to take the rubbish out.

Monday at Last
Stereo Mc's Retroactive
A quick word to thank those of you who came to our party on Friday 13th. I think that apart from the morning after, everything went off very well (not counting the French football disaster)!

Unfortunately, my consumption of beer interferred with my memory and resulted in my forgetting all about the photos I'd promised to take...
To help us recover and to get over the lack of photographic scandal, here is an old but great track from the English Stereo MC - who are also in great form.

The Joys of Nervous Breakdown
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Probably one of the most cult artist of the Folk Era, there has been always some mystery surrounding Nick Drake. His music first, naked and honest which gives a false sense of simplicity.
A voice gentle and dark.

Nick never got successful in his short living (manic-depressive, he decided to jump off the ship at only 26) but his 3 albums are of the kind that never dies.

Back to the Archives
Archive Londinium
Rarely a style of music could be defined by only 2 major albums. This could be the case of trip-hop, which might no have recovered from Portishead's Dummy and Archive's Londinium. I always had a soft sport for the second as the band was not as successful as Portishead (we always love the underdogs).

There's this slightly operatic side in Archive music that I really love, a blend between electro sounds and pop music which is still very much modern 10 years later. How many current electronic records can claim this ?

Archive - "Nothing Else" tiré de "Londinium" (1996, Island Records)

Desesperatly Seeking Rasta
Heads High
It is often difficult to unearth the good tracks in ragga productions these days. There are too many MPC type beats, too many samples from old Studio 1 singles as well as a lack of spirituality.
Certain smooth-talking Jamaicans are more interested in money and babes lying by the pool as well conveying messages with homophobic undertones (sometimes less well hidden than others). All of this is far from the spirit of Rastafari.

In any case, Mr Vegas, delivers a classic here as far as rythm is concerned. With its minimalist ternary beat and old school syths, this track will lift you into another sunnier place.

This track should be listened to, when surrounded by lots of babes....
Preferably while lying by a pool.

The Ideal Crash
Ideal Crash
The only Belgian group to have attained a certain degree of international fame (most notably in France and Benelux), Deus deserve the world. (or should I say that the world deserves Deus!). Their limited reach is most probably due to the constant turnover of group members as well as a fairly erratic distribution of their material.

However with 4 albums under their belt and an undeniable talent for waxing lyrical, the Commission in Brussels would do well to sign them up.

"Instant Street" is taken from their third album, which is undoubtedly more pop than its predecessors. Do not let the almost country-folk beginning of this track put you off. It is a real pop/rock gem which will give you goosebumps - a speciality of pimply English guitarists!

Deus - "Instant Street" from "The Ideal Crash" (1999, Island)

Syd Dale's Private Library
The Sound Gallery

Self taught composer from the 60's, Syd Dale is one of the pioneers of library music (music done especially for TV, Radio and ads). In this track, with a slight psychedelic flavor, Syd shows the extent of his talent. One of my favorite "easy listening" tunes.

Syd Dale - "The Penthouse Suite" from "The Sound Gallery vol.1" (1996, Island)

Bazbaz

A Dub version of the old TV series "Wild Wild West" made by French producer Camille Bazbaz. James West/Robert Conrad hasn't guessed who the murderer is yet, but he has obviously found a massive stock of Ganja...
