Underwater Love
Smoke City - Flying Away

A beautiful UFO in the sky of 1997, Smoke City had an ephemeral career with only two albums. The first, however, was the precursor to a genre of Electro-Brazilian-World fusion, which is still active on the airwaves.

This trio comprising the beautiful Nina Miranda and two musicians from London, Mark Brown and the guitarist Chris Franck, combine Electro and Trip-Hop with the elegance of Bossa. They have a certain gift for the soft and bitter mixes which were innovative at that time. The first single of the album, "Underwater Love" became known internationally as it was used in a Levis ad, directed by Michel Gondry.
If the single monopolizes most of the attention, the album contains numerous little hidden gems, such as "Numbers" a Bossa with hints of Batucada which will overturn the most solid of dancefloors.
A beautiful album from a group who could have become big, but who split up too quickly. The latest news is that Nina is still playing with Chris Franck in a duo called Zeep, who can be found at World Music festivals. We hope to bump into her at a bar sometime.

Fanfarlo
Fanfarlo - Reservoir

It was love at first sight for this English group, (with Swedish singer), based in London. I heard a track in a small Parisien music shop and I left with immediately with the album.

I took a look at some articles about this band on the internet. They talk about Arcade Fire influences, of a singer whose voice resembles that of David Byrne, of Beirut-style brass arrangements. And as I agree with all of these descriptions, it leaves me very little else to say.

A very orchestrated style of Pop which I love: with velvet strings and electric guitars. And hats off to a group who had the courage to completely produce their own album and bypass the big labels boys..

It's A Family Affair
My wife is Irish, but has absolutely no interest in football or rugby. This can be a point of contention in our home, especially during the 6 Nations or the upcoming football qualifiers. No, sport does not interest her at all. Music, however, does. My mandolin solos and my CD collection so impressed her, that she decided to sign up for a life of joint taxes!

I have to point out that her family is full of musicians of all genres: it's a well known fact that the Celtic soul is fed by music. Her dad plays many instruments, one of her sisters is a pianist and her uncles and cousins (of which there are many), also play in various groups.

Coming back to her cousins, I have just discovered one of them, Morgan Condon, is a drummer with the London-based "Motorcycle Display Team". This relatively unknown group (at least in my area) looks really promising. Here is a video for their latest single "Worry Wings": polished and shiny Pop, with calculated simplicity. The result is a powerful trio with great potential and a singer whose voice reminds me of Kelly Jones from Stereophonics.

I am very much looking forward to the future family reunion. If I'm not as good a musician as my Irish friends, then I'd hope at least to be able to talk football without having to lower my head!

Bonobo
Bonobo

One of the pillars of the Down tempo wave (Zero 7, Boards of Canada, Trentemøller, De Phazz, and more), this is Bonobo's last production: an EP of remixes, of which we have selected the best for your listening pleasure - of course the fact that there are only 2 tracks simplifies the selection process somewhat!

Restructured by the New-York Mice Parade, "Recurring" is on of those tracks which takes the form of an organic, electric wave with cello and white noise going head to head. Let yourself go and be transported while listening.

A brief Autumnal moment which straddles darkness and the last rays of sun.

To start with, we have an excellent video directed by Chris Cairns, a producer who teamed up with Scratch Perverts and Foreign Beggars, excellent producers of Hip-Hop in the land of ale and pies. Even if the music isn't fascinating, the video is great and deserves a few minutes of your attention....

Now to get back to the music, I propose this very strangely titled single "This Kid Named Miles And Medusa". It is a true Hip-Hop/Funk gem. The track is fairly old school and I found it on an excellent compilation, whose proceeds go towards the Rainforest Action Network.
It's an excellent way to massage your eardrums and your karma in one go.

Bomb the Bass
Bomb The Bass - Clear

Bomb The Bass, the pseudonym of London producer, Tim Simeon, clearly marked the beginning of the 1980s with some wicked singles, such as "Beat Dis".

The first single from his 3rd album (and undoubedly the best), "Bug Powder Dust" is an electro hip-hop mix of the highest standard, with a hypnotic bass loop.  It was originally composed by the American Jazz bassist Alphonso Johnson (for those of you who like all the details!).

A superb set which I hope you'll enjoy as much as I do.

Welcome to the Party
Jazzman Records - Welcome to the Party

How could you refuse such an invitation? Especially considering who it's from : the Jazzman label...These are parties that no self-respecting groover should be alien to. This little London label delights us with its rare selections and compilations with Latin, soul and jazz inclinations.

The first track, "Welcome to the Party", is amazing in that it is the result of a social programme carried out by the percussionist Montego Joe in Harlem in the '60s.

No-one knows what became of this group of youths but forty years on, this story can bear witness to the fact that this programme of integration through music was not a waste of time or taxpayer's money.

The crackling white noise and faint traffic sounds that open "Untrue" entice the listener on an astonishing journey through the inner city of South London.  Weaving elements of 2-step garage, vocal house, growling deep beats, and melodic key pads into a dub step masterpiece, the album has a Dickensian quality as it seamlessly travels around gritty street corners to stop and hear tales of love, betrayal, and life sung by disparate, downtrodden characters.  You can almost see the shadows dancing against concrete backdrops as small groups nod their heads to music and seek communion and solace through shared self-expression.

Burial has crafted an achingly beautiful tapestry of striking originality, texture and emotion.  Anonymous until his Mercury Prize nomination forced him to reveal his true identity as Will Bevan of South London, his brilliance is as bright as his modesty is magnificent.

Everyone should own this album. It's perfect for a winter's night at the beginning of a dark year.

Snatch
musique Snatch

Guy Ritchie, formerly known as Mr.Madonna, released his second film, Snatch, in 2000. He came to public attention 2 years previous, with his film "Lock, Stock and two smokin barrels". Much in the same vein as its predecessor, Snatch, launches us into the underworld of the British gangster scene, with its mishmash of criminal minds and even more eclectic mugs all tangled up in a web with a diamond at it's centre.

An eclectic sound track, with the tracks brilliantly accompanying  the cut-throat action and the atmosphere of the London underbelly. We'll focus on the "diamond" by Klint, incisive electro jazz to set the scene and we finish with The Specials and their well known "Ghost Town", which so aptly accompanies the trio of blundering black dudes who think they can play with the big boys.

A remix from the always interesting Londoner Four Tet of Radiohead's Skttrbrain. A meeting between explorers. Unstructured and creative.
Apparently Thom Yorke loves it.
