“The The” est le patronyme derrière lequel se cache le musicien anglais Matt Johnson. Délaissant la pop-synthé de ses albums précédents, il compose ce qui restera sans doute son chef d’oeuvre: “Mind Bomb”.

Pour celui-ci, il s’entoure d’un véritable groupe alors que ses opus précédents faisaient appel à des musiciens de studio. Il va ainsi embaucher Johnny Marr, alors en chomage technique après la dissolution des Smiths.

Production grandiose orchestrale, riffs ravageurs: Armageddon Days est le plus beau joyau d’un album qui restera un classique.

Mais ce que j’aime surtout chez Matt Johnson, c’est sa conscience politique et la profondeur de son discours. Trop bon musicien pour tomber dans l’écueil de la protest-song ennuyeuse, il fait partie de ces rares songwriters dont les textes sont une oeuvre à part entière.
